SCHOOL LIFE NEWS

Now it’s official: we’ve grown up!

This September the International Lomonosov school in Berlin-Marzahn has received the recognition of its upper secondary school (Abitur) level from the Berlin Senate. Two years ago, in 2019/2020 we got the official permission of the Senate for this school level and in 2021/2022 for the first time in the fifteen years history of the Lomonosov schools in Berlin we have grade 13 of the higher, gymnasia school level in Germany.

A brief flashback: the Lomonosov school in Berlin opened in 2006 as a German-Russian primary schools for 10 first-graders, with two teachers and one tutor. Today we have three outstanding school buildings in Berlin, around 580 pupils and 100 teachers, all the three school levels: primary, lower secondary and upper secondary.

Why is this a great and important achievement for the Lomonosov school and a reason to be proud of ourselves? The school with its pupils and their parents, teachers and educators, the principal Liliya Ter-Zakharyan and the coordinator Dr. Alexander Ott has “matured” in every sense up to the 13th grade! With the Senate recognition of the upper secondary school level, our school in Marzahn is officially entitled to conduct the Abitur graduation examination and issue the Abitur school-leaving certificate.

What was required of the school in order for the Berlin Senate to officially recognize its upper secondary school level? Firstly, the existence of the graduation class. Secondly, a certain level of pupils’ performance. Thirdly, the school is to meet the high state requirements for teacher qualifications and experience. Fourthly, the approved educational concept.

Congratulations to everyone involved! Fingers crossed for the pupils of grade 13, wishing them a successful graduation school year and… the highest score in their Abitur certificates!

International Lomonosov Campus | Opening

The key event of the year for MITRA Association in Berlin, a significant event for Berlin district Marzahn-Hellersdorf and for the whole city – the opening of the International Lomonosov Campus took place on the 9th of August, 2021. The innovative educational complex, the architectural ensemble with no parallel in the federal land of Berlin or in Eastern Germany.

“What makes this project unique is that, strange as it may seem, there is not a single school from primary till grade 13, till the Abitur in Berlin – the European metropolis, where not only children living in Berlin, but also those coming from elsewhere in the world, can study. We have succeeded in creating the conditions for this to become a reality. From now on there is a school with great boarding houses in Berlin for those children who, while being the residents of other countries, can obtain the German Abitur and study further at a German or European university,” – Marina Burd, the executive director of MITRA Association, the head organization of the International Lomonosov Schools in Berlin, proudly introduces the new campus.

“I wish all schools in our district were built and opened at such a speed and fit so wonderfully into the landscape. (…) I wish I had grandchildren of school age to send to this school!” Dagmar Pole, mayor of Marzahn-Hellersdorf district in Berlin, the Campus opening ceremony, August 2021.

Erfolgreich geknobelt!

IN THE TOP TEN | MATHS COMPETITION ‘PANGEA’

A great news right on the start of the new year 2020: The International Lomonosov school is among the TOP TEN schools in Germany according to the results of the ‘Pangea’ mathematics competition in 2019. Thus, the school has not only repeated, but even beaten its own result of 2017.

The ‘Pangea’ mathematics competition combines the joy of mental exercises with logical thinking and calculation skills. Pupils of the International Lomonosov school from the 3rd to 10th grade take part in the competition regularly and always achieve great results. Go on!

THE WINNERS OF ‘PANGEA’ MATHS COMPETITION | JUNE 19, 2019

More than 100 000 pupils all around Germany took part in the first round of the nationwide ‘Pangea’ mathematics competition. Only ten best pupils of each age group in the Eastern federal states entered the final regional round that took place on June 8, 2019 in Berlin. Two 6th-graders of the International Lomonosov school in Marzahn – Timofei Kazak and Alexander Khan – successfully represented the school in the competition.

While the first two selection rounds of the competition consisted of multiple-choice questions, the final round included quite complex tasks and puzzles without answer options. Timofei showed a great performance and won a gold medal in the regional final. Alexander also had an excellent result and won an award in the silver category.
We are so proud of our schoolchildren! Congratulation!
