SECONDARY LEVEL I

INFORMATION ABOUT THE SECONDARY LEVEL I AT THE INTERNATIONAL LOMONOSOV SCHOOL

Welcome to the International Lomonosov school in Berlin – a bilingual (German-Russian) state licensed full-day school with gymnasium level! Below is useful information about the secondary level I (grades 7 to 10) school study.

CLASSES

The Lomonosov school provides gymnasium level school studies. We use teaching materials developed for gymnasium schools. As a bilingual (German-Russian) school the International Lomonosov school offers teaching in some of the main school subjects, like maths, natural sciences, history and music in both German and Russian.

Teaching in the secondary level I is focused not only on languages, but also on natural sciences, thus biology, chemistry and physics classes take place in specially equiped classrooms with two academic hours each per week.

LANGUAGES

German is taught as a native language, English as a first foreign language, and Russian as a second foreign language. This approach allows us to meet the gymnasium level enrollment requirements.

CLASS SIZE

At present the number of pupils per class at the secondary level I is not higher than 20.

NEXT GRADE TRANSITION

Pupils come to the next grade automatically at the end of the school year. A pupil can do one more year at the same grade, an application from parents or guardians is needed for this.

SCHOOL-LEAVING CERTIFICATES OF THE SECONDARY LEVEL I ISSUED BY THE INTERNATIONAL LOMONOSOV SCHOOL

The International Lomonosov school issues the following certificates upon the completion of studies at the secondary level I:

  • certificate of basic general education (after grade 9) / BBR: Berufsbildungsreife
  • extended certificate of basic general education (after grade 10) / eBBR: erweiterte Berufsbildungsreife
  • certificate of complete general education (after grade 10) / MSA: Mittlerer Schulabschluss
  • certificate of complete general education with admission to the gymnasium level (after grade 10) / MSA (GO): Mittlerer Schulabschluss mit Zulassung für die gymnasiale Oberstufe

To obtain the certificate of complete general education (MSA) a pupil has to pass tests and examinations in the following subjects:

  • LAL 7 (grade 7): mathematics, German, English
  • VERA 8 (grade 8): mathematics, German, English
  • BBR (grade 9): mathematics, German

Tests and examinations’ results are taken into account in the school inner evaluation to improve the quality of teaching. The International Lomonosov school holds an above-average position in Berlin schools examination results rating, and we strive to keep this position.

SECONDARY LEVEL II

The highest, gymnasium level of studies (Sekundarstufe II – Abiturstufe) is officially open in both International Lomonosov schools as of August 1, 2019. This means that now all schoolchildren who pass the MSA examination (gymnasium level after grade 10) and have a recomendation for enrollment in a gymnasium, can be accepted in our school and can pass a final examination for high-school diploma (Abitur) after the three years of study.

DAY SCHEDULE

Classes start at 8:00 a.m. and usually run till 4 p.m. Schoolchildren also take various extra-curricular activities during this time. The pupils of grades 7 to 10 have a ‘fruit break’ in the morning, hot lunch and an afternoon snack.

ADDITIONAL CLASSES

All students of grades 7 to 10 attend additional classes in mathematics, German and English, for an in-depth study of these subjects of the main school program. Pupils prepare for exams and school competitions here as well.

SCHOOL ENROLMENT

ENROLMENT POLICIES

We accept school-age children speaking German and Russian who passed the admission tests.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

Our application deadline is the same as in other primary schools in Berlin, in accordance with the law. There are admission tests six months prior to the school year start, tests results are sent to parents by post. After that we invite parents to sign a school enrolment contract.

ADMISSION TESTS

Our teachers or educators together with psychologists test the first-graders-to-be with regard to their psychological readiness for school and ability to learn. The tests also help to find out possible learning problems and shortcomings (for instance, logopedic). German and Russian language skills (comprehension, spoken speech) are checked as well.

ENROLLEMENT PROCEDURE IN CASE OF TRANSFER FROM OTHER SCHOOLS

A half-year/full-year certificate or an oral testimonial from the previous school is to be submitted by parents or guardians along with an application form. Key factors for admission are high marks in maths, German and nature-study. We also make an entrance interview. Schoolchildren from all parts of Berlin are accepted in the schools subject to availability.
